How to Make Cheese Straws with Puff Pastry

Here’s how to make perfect cheese straws in no time:

✓ Using store-bought puff pastry, you can put together this recipe in no time.  I thaw frozen pastry dough overnight in the refrigerator.  This allows the dough to come to temperature gradually. ✓ I unfold the pastry, which is typically sectioned in 3 panels, and brush olive oil on it.  I season it with an Italian spice blend and add some cayenne for a kick.  But you can add any herbs of your choice and skip cayenne too. ✓ Then, I spread an even layer of shredded cheese.  I personally like using cheddar cheese or freshly grated parmesan cheese for this recipe.  But customize it with your favorite cheese.  I have found that thinly shredded cheese works better here as it sticks better.  If you check out the video, you’ll agree with me. ✓ Now, place a sheet of plastic wrap on top of the cheese, and using a rolling-pin, or a heavy bottom skillet, press down the cheese into the dough.  We want it to stick to the dough as much as possible. ✓ Remove the wrap and cut the dough in 1 inch strips.  I find it easier to cut the dough into thirds, following the natural divisions.  Then, it’s easier for me to cut it into three even strips per panel. ✓ Carefully lift each strip from the edges and start twisting in the opposite direction.  How much you twist it, will haven an impact on the end texture.  If you prefer a more bread-like crispness, twist it in big turns.  But if you like it extra crispy, twist it real tight. ✓ Place them on a lined baking tray.  Sprinkle any leftover cheese over the top and bake in a pre-heated oven at 400°F, for about 13-15 minutes.  Allow them to cool for 15 minutes after baking, to turn crisp.

Serving Suggestion for These Easy Cheese Straws

My kids and I love these cheese straws with a bowl of Roasted Red Pepper Tomato Soup.  We almost always have this combination. We enjoy them with Chili too. Cheese straws make great finger foods for cocktails or parties.  When I’m making them for a larger group, I cut them in the middle.  This way the portion is perfect for my guests. When my kids have friends over, I serve these with a bowl of warmed up marinara sauce.  Kids love to dip their cheese straws in that.
