What is Chutney

Chutney is a dipping sauce or relish made with a variety of fresh herbs, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and sometimes, even yogurt. Chutney can be sweet, spicy, tangy or a combination of flavors.

These flavorful condiments are made with seasonal ingredients using a mortar or pestle or a blender.

How is Chutney Served

Chutneys are a huge part of Indian cuisine. I would guess and say there are over 50 kinds of chutneys in India, and I’m pretty sure that’s an understatement 🙂 In northern India, chutneys are an intregral part of Chaat, which refers to popular Indian street food dishes, including samosa, dahi vada and pakora, just to name a few. They also make for a great spread for popular wraps and sandwiches, like Paneer Frankie, Chicken Kathi Roll and Bombay Toast. In the south, fresh coconut is used as a key ingredients in many recipes. These chutneys are commonly served with Idli and dosa.

How to Store or Freeze

I store chutney in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 5 days. Many times, I make a large batch and transfer the extra chutney into ice cube trays. Then I seal it and freeze it for up to 3 months. To re-use, I thaw out the desired portion in the fridge overnight.
